The Volkswagen Westfalia T4 Transporter California Highway Camper Model History
Towards the end of 1994 the VW Westfalia T4 Transporter California Highway model was introduced. The Westfalia California Highway was a special edition bus to celebrate Westfalia’s 150 year Jubilee. The Westfalia California Highway was available in poptop roof version. Also a new type of roof was available called the “Compact” roof. This was a solid roof that was lower than a standard hightop and did not have an integral bed but had extra storage compartments. The basic model equipment was the same as the 1994/ 95 California Coach but it also had some extra equipment fitted as standard and was available in only two exterior colours.
Circa 1996 Volkswagen made changes to to the base model T4 transporter. The old model became known as the “short nose” version and the new model as the “long nose”. Although both versions look fairly similar the main changes related to the front doors, front wings, bonnet, front grills and headlights. The changes were made to increase the engine bay size in order to accommodate the new VR6 engine option. The first California Highways were made using the “short nose” T4 as a base and then models after circa 1996 were made using the “long nose” T4 version as a base.
