The Volkswagen Westfalia T4 Transporter California Exclusive Camper Model History Circa 1996 Volkswagen made changes to to the base model T4 transporter. The old model became known as the “short nose” version and the new model as the “long nose”. Although both versions look fairly similar the main changes related to the front doors, front wings, bonnet, front grills and headlights. The changes were made to increase the engine bay size in order to accommodate the new VR6 engine option. At the same time the above changes were made Westfalia updated the T4 Transporter California Exclusive model. The external colour and engine options were updated and the standard equipment specification improved (when compared with the original 1994 - 1996 version). 1996 - 2003 VW Westfalia T4 Transporter California Exclusive Camper Interior Photos The Volkswagen Westfalia California Exclusive camper had grey / multicoloured speckle furniture with a beech wood colour edging. The upholstery was a grey / multicoloured cactus patterned fabric.
4) 1996 - 2003 VW Westfalia T4 California Exclusive Camper Upholstery Specification The upholstery material in the VW Westfalia T4 California Exclusive camper for driver, passenger and rear seat / bed was a Jacquard woven design using a grey material with multi coloured cactus pattern known as “Kactus”.
The curtains for sides in the VW Westfalia T4 California Exclusive camper were grey.
5) 1996 - 2003 Volkswagen Westfalia T4 California Exclusive Camper High Top Roof Specification The high top roof outside finish for the VW Westfalia California Exclusive Camper is in the same colour as the vehicle. High top is insulated with 30mm thick mineral wool. The inside headroom of the vehicle with hightop was 205 cm. Two opening side windows in roof (one on each side) with mosquito nets and black out for sleeping (double roller blinds). Roof air vent (middle) with mosquito net, sloping and parallel adjustment.
Upper bed in hightop is 200 cm x 107 cm and bed cushion foam is 6.5 cm thick. Fixing point for awning (right side) and sport rack (left and right side) up to max 25 Kg load. 6) 1996 - 2003 Volkswagen Westfalia T4 California Exclusive Camper Flooring and Carpeting Specification The flooring in the rear of the VW Westfalia T4 California Exclusive camper was a hard wearing grey PVC material with multi coloured speckles. The step is made from grey plastic.

Adjustable instrument panel lights. Courtesy light with switchable delay and contacts on the cab doors. Warning light for hand brake, brake circuit failure and brake fluid level. Windscreen wipers with intermittent, two speed and wash / wipe functions. Three 11 Watt transistor lights (Warmton). Living / Bedroom Area Two person seat bench that slides and folds to make a double bed in conjunction with separately stored bed extension. Has a folding and adjustable armrest on right hand side. Rear seat bench has two three point automatic safety belts. Two headrests in rear seat. Storage compartment under the seat bank. Three storage compartments in the seat bank front.
Double bed is 189 cm x 112 cm.
Fold out table with support foot on the left side wall under the opening window (37 cm x 33 cm).
Dining table with support leg on the left side wall above the folding table (101 cm x 41.4 cm). Table top stored in the wardrobe.
Kitchen The kitchen is at the rear left of the vehicle and has a sink / cooker combination with cupboard underneath.
Cabinet on the left side wall with fridge that has a shaped lid for draining dishes. Wardrobe at the rear right with folding door, telescopic clothes rail, locking valuables safe box. Unit on right hand side with one drawer, two doors, two shelves and a garbage bag holder. Shelves above the right hand side unit in the hightop area and also below the fold out table. Roof storage lockers with louvre doors at rear left in kitchen area and bathroom. Gas cooker with two burners (performance between approx 1000W - 1800 W. Consumption at rated output is approx 140g / hour). Gas bottle “Camping Gaz 907 (2.8kg). Gas pressure regulator, quick release connection with shut off valve for gas connection. Separator made from 6 mm thick safety glass with chrome nickel edging between cooker and backrest of seat bank.
Sink with electric tap.
Fridge 40 litre Electrolux compressor fridge.
Bathroom Bathroom is at the rear of vehicle.
Fold down wash basin in the left hand side wall moulding with fixed tap and drain outlet. “Thetford” cassette toilet with 20 litre holding tank and electric water flush. Hinged door between bathroom and living area (with 180 degree hinge action). Mirror on the back of the door inside bathroom. Freshwater and Wastewater 55 litre freshwater tank (08/1997 brochure states capacity is 47 litres and 08/2001 brochure states capacity is 49 litres). 65 litre wastewater tank (frost protected inside vehicle) 08/2001 brochure states capacity is 63 litres. Level display. Emptied using drain connection with valve located under the vehicle. Standard Equipment Driver and Passenger Airbags. Storage cubby hole in middle under dashboard. Disk brakes also on rear. New combined ABS / EDS system (Standard when VR6 motor is ordered / optional extra when other motors specified until 1997 and then standard on all models). Low noise exhaust system. Screw on front wings (cheaper to repair). Reversible Bumper. Better sound proofing in cab and living area. Padded instrument panel with improved equipment. Driver and passenger seat on roller bearings (for easier seat adjustment). Improved engine mounting system. New 5 speed gearbox for TDI and VR6 motors. Central locking with radio remote control (optional extra until 10/1999 then fitted as standard). Electric driver and passenger windows (optional extra until 10/1999 then fitted as standard).
